On Labor Day I competed in (really just hoped to not drown) the
Waikiki Roughwater Swim. The Roughwater is considered the world's most popular open water swim event and hosts about 1,000 swimmers from all over the world. A few drunk Naval Officers used the Roughwater as the basis of the swim portion for the Ironman Triathlon.

While the North Shore Swim Series is known for its great, and easy, conditions the Roughwater can occasionally live up to its name. The 2003 race resulted in Hawaii's largest ever ocean rescue when 600 swimmers couldn't make it in. This year's conditions were great - flat and no current.
The finish is right at the beach on the Hilton Rainbow Tower. You have to kind of pick your way through all the beachgoers to make your way to the finish line.
I finished the 2.3 mile course in a little over an hour. You want to do well, but the water is so nice you don't really want to get out.
Mom and Dad were waiting at the finish line with a couple dozen fresh Leonard's malasadas - well known little Portuguese donuts. I can't stop at just six.
After the race the whole family and some friends met up at the Hale Koa for an afternoon by the pool. Zach found the malasadas.
